After bad life decisions cost him his ability to walk, Titus Broom came to the Harvest Center of Charlotte as a volunteer in 2017 to teach the Celebrate Recovery Class. A previous life of selling and being addicted to drugs, the trauma of losing loved ones and not knowing his biological father led a recovered Titus to feel he would be a good candidate to volunteer his time and abilities to help and encourage others facing the same issues. He believes in people and refuses to give up on anybody.
When he began his volunteer journey at the Center, he was amazed by the diversity of the people in his classroom. These program participants not only had the common thread of homelessness to bond them, but he also found a group of people who were broken and had been given up on. He quickly realized that they all wanted the ability to learn and change their lives, and not just be handed the keys for a place to live.
Being hired on as a Transformation Specialist at The Harvest Center of Charlotte in 2018 took on a whole new meaning for Titus. Now, he could interact with program participants one on one and not just in the classroom setting. Through this, he gave people the ability to open up and share experiences that they didn’t want to talk about in a room full of people. It also allowed him to be more transparent with each individual and share more about his own life and experiences. He shared with them a community of people willing to walk beside them in their journey if they were willing to do the work.
The key to the transformation in Titus’ life has been his relationship with Jesus Christ. It was the backbone for everything for him. Like Jesus, he and members of the Harvest Center Community were written off. Instead of turning to a life of bad decisions, Jesus showed love to people and built a community where followers were transformed. This is Titus’ greatest hope for the residents of the Harvest Center of Charlotte.
With your help, we can transform the lives of so many.
