“You Gave Me a Family”: Ayanna’s Story of Restoration
Imagine hearing “no” so many times that you eventually stop believing anyone will ever say “yes”.
For Ayanna Lewis, that was her reality. Years of loss, rejection, and disappointment had taught her to protect herself from being hurt again. Asking for help meant becoming vulnerable, and trusting someone meant risking another disappointment. So, she learned to carry life’s burdens on her own, even when the weight became unbearable.
When Ayanna arrived at The Harvest Center of Charlotte, she wasn’t just looking for a fresh start. She was searching for something she had gone far too long without: a place where she could feel safe, supported, and accepted.
She entered the CLT Passport Program with an open mind but a guarded heart. That began to change when she met Titus, a member of The Harvest Center’s Transformation Team. His patience, consistency, and willingness to listen helped Ayanna begin to believe that she didn’t have to face life’s challenges alone.
Through Financial Literacy, Jobs for Life, and Trauma Reboot, Ayanna began rebuilding more than her circumstances. She was rebuilding her confidence, confronting painful experiences, and discovering the strength to believe in herself again.
But when Ayanna stood before guests at The Harvest Center’s 2026 Love Thy Neighbor Luncheon, it wasn’t the classes or resources that she spoke about most. It was something much deeper.
“You gave me a family.”
For someone who had spent so much of her life learning to survive on her own, those five words carried the weight of everything she had overcome.
And that sense of belonging didn’t disappear when Ayanna graduated.
More than a year later, she continues to return to The Harvest Center, volunteering, attending events, and pouring into the community that once poured into her. The relationships she built have become a lasting part of her life.
“This isn’t a place where the support ends when the program does. It’s a place where the connections continue, the doors remain open, and the love doesn’t come with an expiration date.”
Today, Ayanna is stronger, more confident, and hopeful about what lies ahead. Her story is a reminder that overcoming situational homelessness and life’s most difficult circumstances requires more than a roof overhead. Sometimes, transformation begins when someone finally feels seen, valued, and loved.
Ayanna arrived at The Harvest Center carrying the pain of everything life had taken from her. She left knowing she had gained something she never expected to find.
A family. A place to belong. And the hope to believe in tomorrow again.
As Ayanna shared in her own words, “Your support didn’t just change my life. It restored it.”
